Approximately 100 students and supporters of student financial aid participated in WAICU Students’ Day on March 29, 2017. The grassroots advocacy event in support of the Wisconsin Grant began with a civic engagement workshop, which was followed by visits to state legislators and their staff at the state capitol.
The Wisconsin Grant is the state’s need-based student financial aid program, which helps over 10,000 students at Wisconsin private, nonprofit colleges and universities pursue a quality education. Most of the WAICU Students’ Day participants were recipients of the Wisconsin Grant who shared their stories about how financial aid has helped them to achieve their college and career goals.
Participants urged legislators to support an increase in funding for the Wisconsin Grant in the state budget. The Wisconsin Grant has historically received bipartisan support, and Governor Walker has proposed a 5 percent increase in funding for the 2017-19 budget. Over 65 legislative offices were visited on WAICU Students’ Day, making the event a big success.
